Vintage Violet Corner

August was a very busy month for me.  I was not able to dedicate the time needed to find some of the vintage varieties on the wanted list.  My family and I undertook a great adventure.  We moved from Missouri, where I was born and raised, to Southern California.  Wow what a move!  We are now settled in.  The kids are in school and I can resume my violet activities.  It is my hope that next month I will have found some varieties on the wanted list.  I have found that many vintage vendors do not have on line services.  I have mailed them letters requesting their catalogues.  I hope that I find what we need for this column in their stock.

I want to start this month's column with a recap of the definition of a vintage violet.  A vintage violet is a violet that was hybridized at lest 25 years ago.  So any violet hybridized September 15, 1978, as of the printing of this newsletter, or before.  Check your collections and see how many vintage varieties you have!

I would like to introduce a couple of vintage varieties.  I have picked two of the more popular varieties to highlight this month.  They are both easy to find and are very beautiful!

The first is from my personal collection.  Black Ace.  It has just recently bloomed for me.  It was all I had hoped it would be.  Judge for yourself!

Black Ace (3541) 11/24/1978 (R. Nadeau) Semidouble dark burgundy/white edge.    Plain, pointed. Standard

The second variety is from our very own Joan Baker.  She has generously given me permission to share this variety from her personal collection with you.  Nancy Reagan

I

Nancy Reagan (2167) 02/01/1971 (Rienhardt) Double dark red-wine two-tone. Variegated, plain. Large

If you are looking for a vintage variety or see a variety on the most wanted list that is in your collection.  Please contact me at kschmid300@yahoo.com.  I need your help to make this column the best it can be.
